Title 1: Exploration of the Jupiter System: Galileo to the Future

Abstract 1:

400 years ago a young red-headed scientist turned a primitive telescope toward Jupiter and discovered its four large moons, a discovery that revolutionized the understanding of the solar system. The Pioneer, Voyager, and Galileo missions turned these objects from fuzzy blurs to real worlds with complex geological histories. Understanding these bodies, especially Europa and Ganymede, is the focus of the Europa Juipter System Mission, identified as the priority one Flagship Mission for the Outer Solar System by NASA and the European Space Agency, joint partners in this ptoject. This presentation outlines the current state of knowledge and the principal goals idenified for the next mission to the Jupiter system and its diverse moons.
